| About the Counseling Office
The counseling office serves many roles for high school students and their parents. Most commonly, students associate counselors with the creation of student schedules, but this is only one of the counselors’ many responsibilities. Counselors are also called to help students in personal crisis, perform mediations between students, consult with students on problem solving, and provide information and referral to services outside the school. Counselors are different from social workers and psychologists in that counselors receive specific training in career development. Although a small percentage of high school students know exactly what career to pursue, your counselor can help you identify some strengths and interests to explore. Counselors can help you find information about career options, education, salaries, etc. For most students, some sort of training or education after high school will be necessary to achieve career goals. Counselors can help students identify appropriate programs or schools, and are an essential part of the application process. The counseling office also provides information on scholarships and financial aid that may be available. It is important to understand that counselors believe in self determination of students. That means that a counselor will advise you on decisions by helping you gather as much information as possible. A counselor may even suggest that you follow a specific course of action, based on your stated goal. It is most often our intent to help students advocate and take responsibility for themselves. Ultimately, the counseling office hopes that each student will maximize his or her potential while in high school and develop a challenging, but realistic, career plan. |
